A Lubi's Story, randomly selected from 8 stories.

I was part of the history of Lubis from when there was only the store on University. I had my first Lubi when my father took me for lunch with him...this was about 1971 and I was about 6. This was in the day that Lakewood Shopping center ruled the southside. Anyone shopping could go along University from St Augustine Road to the shopping center and find anything they needed. We all went to the schools (San Jose, Dupont, Wolfson)in the area, shopped, and ate in the southside area. My father owned Toy Parade in Lakewood Shopping Center from the 1960's through to the time of his death in 1984. I remember having lunch with my father and meeting the business owners he knew. I remember the family that owned Lubi's...I remember who I believe was the father of the family behind the counter. He seemed so happy meeting the customers and times that he talked with my father. I can remember them laughing with one another when we came to the shop to eat. I always had to order the Original Lubi Sub. I never seemed to want anything else. I left Jax in 1984 when I graduated from Wolfson and just never made it back that way in life, though I still consider it my home. I have had the chance to visit Lubis once about ten years ago, and was amazed someone had remembered my father that was working there at the time. I visited a few other friends such as the shoe store in Lakewood and they too remembered my father, our family, as part of what the southside was long time past. I hope that everytime I am able to visit my home, there will be a Lubi to greet me. I have just added your store also onto facebook in the survey of "My 5 Greatest Fast Food Places" Thanks for the memories. Response from LUBINND: Memories are great aren't they. I use to love going into your Dad's Toy Parade, he always had the "coolest" (showing my age) toys ever. Yes. Lakewood shopping center was the center of all our lives here, you could get everything, just like you say. I remember your dad and my dad Bill sitting around talking, especially when the city started to enlarge University Blvd. and then came Publix, which by the way is building a brand new store in the old cow pasture where Albertson's use to be. Remember the drug store in the shopping center had the best ice cream cones. Yes, those were the days.
